Ferric C. Fang, M.D.

Dr. Ferric Fang is a professor of laboratory medicine-pathology and microbiology at University of Washington who studies bacterial genetics and pathogenesis. He obtained his undergraduate and medical education at Harvard University and his post-doctoral clinical and research training at the University of California, San Diego. He has over 35 years of experience as a clinician, educator and researcher studying bacterial genetics and pathogenesis, including the evolution of transcriptional regulatory networks, extracytoplasmic stress responses, host- and microbe-derived nitric oxide, bacterial iron metabolism and infections caused by Salmonella and Staphylococcus aureus. He also performs translational research to develop and evaluate molecular diagnostic methods for the rapid detection of pathogens and antimicrobial resistance genes and has performed analyses of peer review, publication misconduct and other aspects of the scientific enterprise.
He has published more than 250 peer-reviewed articles and currently serves as the director of clinical microbiology at Harborview Medical Center and an editor of Clinical Microbiology Reviews. He is a former editor-in-chief of Infection and Immunity, past chair of the 海角社区appGeneral Meeting Program Committee, and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Association of American Physicians, the American Academy of Microbiology and the American Society of Clinical Investigation. He has directly mentored 63 undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate trainees, many of whom have gone on to successful independent careers in biomedical research, and is the founding program director of the UW Interdisciplinary Training Program in Bacterial Pathogenesis.
