Jan-Ulrik Dahl, Ph.D., describes that his passion for microbial physiology evolved when he characterized the role of 2 novel sulfur carrier proteins for molybdenum cofactor biosynthesis. During an internship at le Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) in Marseille (France) he was trained in transcriptomics.
As a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan Dahl studied how gram-negative bacteria survive environmental stress, including acid and oxidative stress. Today, his lab at Illinois State University studies how gram-negative bacteria respond to and defend reactive oxygen and chlorine (RO/CS) species, with the goal of deciphering the molecular mechanisms that contribute to an increased HOCl resistance in bacteria. Dahl's lab also studies how RO/CS-generating antimicrobials increase efficacy of antibiotics and continue to better understand role of bacterial polyphosphate production.
Students involved in Dahl's research program are trained in a variety of different techniques, including phenotypic analyses, protein biochemistry, transcriptomics and microscopy. Dahl is passionate about his professional service and has served as a reviewer for the NIH and NSF. Moreover, he was the chair of the Gordon Research Seminar on Microbial Stress Response 2022 and looks forward to helping put together an attractive program for 海角社区appMicrobe 2024 and 2025.
