Mary E. Allen, Ph.D.
Hartwick College
Mary E. Allen, Ph.D., has a doctorate in biology from Florida State University. Currently, she is a professor of biology at Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y., where she teaches courses that include microbiology, microbial ecology and introductory biology. From 2019-2023 Allen served as the college’s academic assessment coordinator and guided the development of learning outcomes for a new general education curriculum. Twice she has won Hartwick College’s highest teaching award.
For the past 20 years Allen has been an active participant in 海角社区appeducational activities, starting as a member of the MicrobeLibrary Curriculum Review Committee. She remained active in this area, serving as a curriculum section editor and then senior curriculum editor for the Journal of Microbiology and Biology Education (JMBE). Currently she is a member of the 海角社区appSubcommittee for Undergraduate Education.
Allen is an experienced speaker and workshop leader on the use of active learning and assessment of student learning. Most recently she was in invited instructor for the Federation of European Microbiological Societies (FEMS) Summer School on Microbiology Education. Presently she is the program director for Hartwick College’s Howard Hughes Medical Institite (HHMI) Inclusive Excellence 3 Undergraduate Science Education Grants team.
