Nasia Safdar, M.D., Ph.D., is an internationally recognized leader in healthcare-associated infection prevention research, specifically C. difficile infection (CDI). Her translational innovative work employs methods from health systems engineering to tackle C. difficile prevention comprehensively. Her seminal discoveries include discovering the role of multiple health system elements in contributing to spread of CDI, using system design principles to implement complex interventions within health systems and optimizing the interactions between healthcare workers, whose behavior is key to reducing CDI, and the health system. In 2017, Safdar was awarded a President’s Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on outstanding scientists and engineers beginning their independent careers. In 2018, she received a prestigious NIH Director’s New Innovator Award, which provides funding for unusually creative early-stage investigators.
