Peter Gilligan, Ph.D., D(ABMM), F(AAM) is the former Director of the Clinical Microbiology-Immunology Laboratories at the University of North Carolina Hospitals. During his 42 years as a clinical microbiologist, he has been involved in the clinical laboratories’ response to a wide range of “novel” infectious agents including Clostridium difficile, HIV, Burkholderia cepacia complex, Mycobacterium abscessus complex, anthrax, SARS and influenza A H1N1 2009. Dr. Gilligan served as an editor of the Journal of Clinical Microbiology and the Clinical Microbiology Reviews. He was also an initial member of the Board of Editors for mBio. Dr. Gilligan is an emeritus Diplomate of the American Board of Medical Microbiology and Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology. He currently is involved in the community response to COVID-19 in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro community in North Carolina.
