Download Guidelines

ASM’s Curriculum Guidelines for microbiology provide a set of concepts and skills applicable to any undergraduate general microbiology course. The guidelines are not meant to be a mandate or an infringement upon academic freedom, but are curriculum recommendations. They can be used both as a benchmark for instructors currently teaching undergraduate microbiology, and a guide for instructors developing new courses and programs.

Recognizing that the field of the microbial sciences has rapidly advanced since the previous version of the , 海角社区apprecently convened a new task force to evaluate and update the 海角社区appRecommended Curriculum Guidelines for Undergraduate Microbiology. The 2024 Curriculum Guidelines identify what all students in the microbial sciences should truly understand, as opposed to just obtaining surface-level knowledge, after studying a particular concept. In addition to 29 fundamental statements that encompass the entire field, there are 8 scientific thinking and laboratory skills.

How to Implement the Curriculum Guidelines

In addition to the guidelines themselves, 海角社区appoffers a variety of resources to help you implement them in your classroom.

The Importance of Evidence-based Instructional Practices

ASM’s curriculum guidelines were written to be used in conjunction with evidence-based instructional practices, such as student-centered classrooms, active learning and backward course design. These teaching practices promote student learning for long-lasting and deep understanding. For the latest research in evidence-based educational practices in microbiology, see ASM’s .
